Dominique Powell, CSEE, TDM, is director of sports and events at Bryan College Station Sports + Events. As a 2018 Connect Sports Game Changer, he discusses his passion for sports tourism.

What I Do: I try to create lifetime sports experiences for athletes and fans while bringing economic growth to one of the fastest-growing cities in America. I get excited every day to build someone’s dream event as there is no cookie-cutter approach to bringing someone’s vision to field, court or arena. We get to bring that to life, and that is what keeps me energized coming to the office daily.

How I Got Here: I graduated from Texas A&M University in its sports management department. I volunteered and interned with as many events and companies as I could. I graduated and landed at Bryan College Station CVB, where, after starting in a servicing role, I landed in a sports sales position in 2013. We saw tremendous growth in sports sales, which led to increased staff in the department, the creation of the sports and events entity/brand, budget restructuring and an increased marketing focus. I now get to manage all those changes on a daily basis and help create a future for Bryan College Station Sports + Events.

Why I Am a Game Changer: I genuinely care about every person and event I come across, and I hope people feel that when we work together. I want people to know if you care about each other and genuinely want everyone to be successful then the bottom line will come. Room nights, economic impact and budgets will come and go, but those experiences—those relationships, those drinks at the bar after a hard but successful event—are what it’s all about.

Greatest Career Accomplishment: I was voted chairperson of the Brazos Valley Bowl game at age 22. I also spearheaded the creation of the Bryan College Stations Sports + Events entity and brand.

Impressive Stats: Our departmental budget has increased by 500 percent due to production linked directly to sales efforts.

What I Do Outside of Work: I spend a lot of time locally with our young professionals’ network. That organization keeps me busy, from socials to philanthropic endeavors. I love traveling, so I am usually on the road quite a bit. Festivals also have been my scene lately, including the Mac & Cheese Fest in Houston. (If you have not done that festival yet, you are missing out on an experience.) I also spend a lot of time and money spoiling nephews, nieces and godchildren.
